Living with depression has been a lifelong journey marked by numerous treatments, including several forms of ECT, TMS, and countless antidepressants. Throughout this time, finding effective relief has often felt elusive. However, I have gradually uncovered personal strategies that help me navigate daily challenges and offer glimpses of relief, even amidst the toughest moments.

    The Power of Exercise

For many grappling with depression, the thought of physical activity can be daunting. Yet, I’ve discovered that engaging in regular workouts can serve as a powerful tool for revitalization. It’s essential to view exercise not just as a physical task but as a means to restart your mental state.

Despite being in my 70s and managing a variety of health issues, I commit to vigorous workouts daily. In younger days, I would often exercise twice a day to rejuvenate myself. Whether it’s biking or using the elliptical, I set aside 50 minutes, regardless of my initial reluctance. Often, before I begin, doubt clouds my mind, compelling me to believe it’s futile.

Even so, I push myself to treat each session as an experiment—“Just try it.” In the first few moments, the prospect seems overwhelming, but I focus solely on the present minute, counting each down to reach my goal. Remarkably, by the end, I feel a sense of accomplishment and a surge of endorphins that lasts longer than just a fleeting moment. In my darkest times, even a brief boost was better than none; now, it sustains me throughout the day.

    Exploring New Places

Sometimes, a shift in environment can offer fresh perspectives on your personal circumstances. Traveling allows for new experiences that can reshape how you view your relationships and lifestyle. Each journey holds the potential to reveal layers of your identity that might have remained hidden.

After having to leave my teaching position due to safety concerns, I craved a new routine. Following Bruce Springsteen’s tour in Australia became my focus. Though I had little prior knowledge of his music, his energy resonated deeply with me, prompting me to embark on this journey filled with uncertainty.

Embarking on this adventure transformed my experience. I found more than just a distraction; I discovered a sense of pride in my story and the kindness of strangers who validated my efforts. Their encouragement opened my eyes to a more positive self-image. Witnessing their recognition made me realize that I was genuinely fighting for something meaningful.

    The Impact of Music

Music possesses an extraordinary ability to elevate mood and provide solace. It can transport you into a realm where emotions flow freely, offering moments of pure joy. For me, attending Bruce Springsteen’s concerts brought forth a sense of deep connection and belonging.

In his presence, surrounded by thousands of fans, I felt an overwhelming sense of unity and vitality. Those moments anchored me, allowing me to exist fully in the present, unburdened by worries about the past or future. The feelings I experienced during these concerts linger, enabling me to recreate that sense of aliveness through his music long after the shows ended.

    The Art of Writing

Writing serves as a powerful medium to articulate what you experience, fostering connection both with yourself and others. Upon returning from my journey, I realized I had a story worth sharing—one focused on resilience, hope, and the importance of dreaming. It was essential for me to contribute to a dialogue around perseverance and the idea that it’s never too late to seek change.

    Embracing Perseverance

“All you need to do is try.” I often remind myself of this mantra. It encapsulates the essence of self-respect and the understanding that every effort counts. Moving forward, even in small increments, is a victory worth acknowledging. Whether it’s forcing myself onto the exercise bike or confronting my fears of travel, each attempt is a testament to my commitment to progress.

During one of Springsteen’s concerts, he spoke candidly about the struggles we all face, reinforcing the notion that it’s okay to feel lost. Hearing his words resonated with me—reminding me that I was not alone in my battles. It was a moment of validation that reignited my hope and commitment to keep trying.

As I continue navigating my relationship with depression, I’ve learned that those small steps, paired with the influence of a legendary musician, can lead to substantial progress.
